Find Your People

Easier said than done, right? Maybe. Maybe not. I’ve discovered that the phrase “find your people” is slightly misleading. Approached literally, it can be damn near impossible. But when the idea is advanced indirectly, finding “your people” won’t require you looking for them at all. They’ll find you.

Here’s how.

When I imagine finding something, I envision going in search of, seeking out, pursuing, etc. But, I think that view is inaccurate, when it comes to finding your “tribe.” I spent time physically seeking out “my people,” and the results were underwhelming. Over time, I’ve discovered that this quote is true – “Don’t chase people. Be you. Do your own thing, and work hard. The right people who belong in your life will come to you, and stay.”

Don’t chase people. Be an example. Attract them.

In the end, the “example” is all that matters. Successful people attract other successful people because they became successful in their own right, first. It’s that simple.

I now call the Washington, DC area home. Knowing very few people, it’s tempting to socialize and make networking my priority. But I don’t think I’ll find “my people” that way. For sure, socializing is necessary, but what matters most is the work – the example. So, that’s my goal for the remainder of 2017 – to put out great work, and attract the people who belong in my life.
